Liebherr Mining Equipment Newport News Co. (LME) has an immediate job opening for a Team Leader -Drive System. The Liebherr Group’s Mining division supplies the international mining industry with large machines for the extraction of raw materials in open-cast mining environments. Liebherr Mining Equipment Newport News Co. (LME) is responsible for the design, manufacture, sales and service of large scale diesel electric AC and DC haul trucks at its facility based in Newport News, VA.

Newport News, VA Team Leader - Drive System Job Responsibilities:

The Team Leader - Drive System job position requires a qualified candidate who:

• Interfaces with other companies including Liebherr companies to collaborate, develop, design, and test AC & DC drive systems for use on mining trucks
• Manages development, production, and validation of prototype electrical components, systems, and/or software related to drive systems.
• Writes specifications for electric drives at a system and component level.
• Sets priorities of Drive System Team based on needs.
• Researches tools necessary to perform validation and troubleshooting.
• Researches and Implements fault detection algorithms and related reporting
• Analyzes drive system related faults to determine root cause
• Estimates time and cost requirements for new development and R&D projects.
• Investigates and test vendors' products.
• Analyzes components and software tools necessary to perform validation and troubleshooting of electric drive systems
• Estimates time and cost requirements for new development and R&D projects.
• Mentors, trains, and develops Drive Engineers and other personnel on operating procedures and resolution of system malfunctions/troubleshooting approach.
• Works as a team member with other Engineers, Designers, and production personnel or on ad hoc projects.
• Works independently and as a team member with other Group Managers, Engineers, Designers, and production personnel or on ad hoc projects.
• Participates in Engineering Development Program.

The qualified job candidate:

• Directly supervises up to five drive system specific employees in the R&D electrical group.
• Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of R&D Electrical team.
• Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
• Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work, appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Newport News, VA Team Leader - Drive System Job Competencies:

The qualified job candidate has:

• Proficiency in design, operating, and theoretical principles of AC drive systems.
• Knowledge of major truck systems and the interaction between systems, including drive systems, control systems, hydraulic systems, and mechanical systems.
• Knowledge of software programming tools (e.g. CoDeSys, C++, etc.).
• Ability to optimize, troubleshoot, and validate drive systems and drive related components.
• Knowledge of diagnostic tools necessary to verify software stability and function.
• Ability to optimally define components related to the truck drive system.
• Knowledge of communication networks and vehicle communication bus architecture.
• Knowledge of signal processing techniques.
• Knowledge of feedback control systems
• Knowledge of AC drive control theory
• Knowledge of simulation tools (e.g. Matlab)
• Ability to write specifications that describe control function.
• Knowledge of project management principles.
• Knowledge of Project Management tools (ex. Microsoft Project)
• Ability to use MS Office.
• Knowledge of BaaN system as it relates to truck BOM structure and inventory control.
• Ability to read and write electrical schematics.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance manuals, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
• Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations.
• Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis

Newport News, VA Team Leader - Drive System Job Education and Experience:

The qualified team leader is expected to:

• Have a Bachelor’s degree (BSEE) in Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline plus eight years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Travel nationally and internationally up to 20% to customer or supplier sites for durations up to three weeks.
• Complete and maintain mine certifications or safety training such as Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) hazard training.
• Obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license and passport.
